Endurance and perspective: Whilst sailing is usually fun, particularly if it’s social, there are times when it’s cold, wet, windy, and downright miserable. Resilience, grit and emotional agility are essential.
Remember, perspective is also beneficial. How far have we come? How far do we have to go? What’s the quickest and best way to get there? How is the boat handling the conditions? How are the crew working as a team to support each other? How does everyone feel?
Recognising that the situation is temporary rather than permanent is also very helpful. Although easier said than done, when you’re physically or metaphorically cold, wet, and exhausted.
A focus on strengths is empowering. What’s going right? How can we continue to optimise personal and team strengths? How can we get the best out of our boat? What’s the mindset of the crew? What’s the story you are telling yourself?
